33 DAYS ‘TIL CALIFORNIA RODEO SALINAS

Travis Webb

Travis Webb photo by Donna Tate

“The history of the California Rodeo begins in the days of the Spanish Rancheros. Cattle were semi-wild and a herd would contain animals from a variety of different owners, each with his own unique brand to distinguish his animal from his neighbor’s. Round-ups, or “rodears” — the Spanish equivalent, occurred in the fall and spring. Owners would track down and herd as many animals as they could find, and bring them to a central, predetermined location—usually a valley.

In the spring, the purpose of the roundup was for branding, ear-marking, and castration. In the fall, animals were slaughtered for hide and tallow. These events also served as a social gathering. They could last up to or over a week and often included barbecues, fandangos, and competitions in roping and bronco riding.”

Today, the California Rodeo Salinas is the largest and most popular rodeo in California. –From Wikipedia

What The Locals Know–Sailing Races On Monterey Bay

The Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club is very active and you can see sailboats on the water on most sunny days. The MPYC hosts several sail boat races–mostly Sundays on a weekly basis–and it’s a delight for participants and spectators alike. Wednesday is a popular sailing day, but races are not typically held mid-week.

The race schedule can be found at the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club’s website. Most races begin at 1:00 PM and end by 5:00 PM. Spectators can get good views anywhere along the Recreation Trail, but here are some local places where you can get the best views from shore.

Sapporo Restaurant is a local favorite for teppan-yaki and sushi yummies. The restaurant is located upstairs and is right next door to the Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club, located at the Commercial Wharf #2, at the corner of Del Monte Blvd. and Figueroa in Monterey. You’ll find ample paid parking close by.

Del Monte Beach is where you can take a stroll and see all the sailing action without any obstructed views.

Find a bench along the Recreation Trail anywhere from San Carlos Beach park (but the Coast Guard pier can block your view) up to Fisherman’s Wharf.

If you don’t mind seeing the boats from a distance, but want a bigger picture overview, drive up the hill and into the New Monterey neighborhood. You can get pretty good views from the corners of Belden and Dickman, Belden and Hoffman, and Belden and Prescott. The further up you go, more panoramic views will be found. Be mindful of locals walking their dogs and all the stop signs. You don’t want your sightseeing of the water to become dangerous for the locals.

What The Locals Know–Whale Watching

October is a terrific month to go whale watching because it’s warmer here on the Monterey Peninsula and the water tends to be calmer during Autumn.

Late spring, summer and fall are the seasons to see Humpback Whales, Blue Whales and Dolphins.  We recommend every whale watching business on Fisherman’s Wharf because they’re all friendly, offer lots of education and know where to find all the whale action.

We do, however, want to give you an insider’s tip on how to get the most enjoyment out of your whale watching experience.  Here are a few things to remember and/or bring with you:

  • Whale watching takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the tour, so plan for it to take up a big chunk of your day.
  • Wear layers because it can get cold and wet out there on the water.
  • Wear comfy shoes because high heels are less safe or fun on anything smaller than a cruise ship.
  • It is very wise to bring your own sunscreen and a hat because they’re more expensive when purchased on Fisherman’s Wharf.
  • Take your seasickness medication well enough in advance so your body’s ready for the boat ride.  (Follow your medication’s instructions on the label.)
  • If you feel ill while on the boat ride, do the following:
    • NEVER go down into the boat or the boat’s bathroom because you’ll feel worse down there.
    • Stay up on deck, get to the rear of the boat, downwind from where are the people are standing if you’re going to hurl.
    • If you’re feeling queasy but think you can manage not throwing up, stay up on deck and look out far into the horizon.  That horizontal line will give you something to look at and steady your eyes.
    • If you’re feeling queasy and don’t have medication, look up to the sky and stretch your throat.  This should get rid of any gagging feeling.
  • The boat crew depends on tips, so bring extra cash with you and pay before you leave the boat.  Let them know if they’ve done a great job!
