Community & Giving

A Safe Place, Every Single Night:
Meet I-HELP, Our Summer Homes with Heart Partner

Some of the most important work in Monterey County happens after dark, in church fellowship halls and community rooms, when most of us are already home. That is where you will find I-HELP.

This summer, it is also where a piece of your stay with us is headed. From July through September, I-HELP Monterey Bay is our third-quarter partner in the 40th Anniversary Homes with Heart Giving Program, and a portion of every booking will help keep its work going through the busiest months of our year.

What I-HELP actually does

I-HELP stands for the Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program. Run by the nonprofit Outreach Unlimited, it has been part of the fabric of this community since 1992 and is now in its 34th year. Here is the part worth sitting with: it is the only emergency shelter in the Monterey area that opens every night, with no waiting list, for both men and women.

The way it works is beautifully simple. Each evening, guests gather at a central pickup point and are bused to that night’s host site. They share a hot dinner, sleep somewhere safe, and return the next morning. More than 60 local faith communities and service organizations take turns hosting — cooking, setting up beds, and sitting down to eat alongside their guests. In 2023, that quiet rhythm added up to 8,013 bed nights.

More than a bed

A meal and a mattress matter enormously. But I-HELP is built around what comes next. Volunteers and staff work one-on-one with participants on the practical steps back to stability: finding a job, rebuilding daily routines, and setting goals that lead toward permanent housing and independence.

The proof shows up in real lives. One I-HELP participant shared how a stroke, and then the theft of the big rig he had poured his savings into, left him without a home almost overnight. He found I-HELP, got back on his feet, and is now working as a welder and saving toward a car. “I am super grateful to have a place to stay at night,” he said. That is the whole point of the program, in one sentence.

How your summer stay helps

July through September is our high season on the Peninsula — the long evenings, the festivals, the visitors who come back year after year. That is exactly when we wanted I-HELP in the spotlight. As guests settle into a comfortable rental and enjoy the coast, their stays help fund the meals, shelter, and workforce-readiness support that I-HELP provides to neighbors who need a safe night of their own.

During Q3, we are contributing to I-HELP, along with recognition at a community presentation. It is one quarter of a year-long promise we made for our 40th anniversary.

Forty years, one neighborhood

MontereyRentals.com  opened its doors in 1986. Over four decades, we have helped thousands of residents find long-term housing and welcomed tens of thousands of guests to the Peninsula. Homes with Heart is how we are marking the milestone — not with a single splashy gesture, but with four local nonprofits supported quarter by quarter through the year.

I-HELP has been showing up every night for 34 years, congregation by congregation, meal by meal. This summer, every stay you book helps it keep showing up.

Want to do more? You can learn about volunteering, hosting, or donating directly at ihelpmontereybay.org. And when you book your Peninsula stay with us this summer, you are already part of it.
